Size, power, and enclosure type all matter. We break down what to look for so you get bass that hits — without rattling your mirrors off.

subwoofer can transform your car audio experience, but choosing the wrong one leads to muddy bass, wasted power, or an enclosure that eats your entire trunk. Here’s how to get it right.

Size Matters (But Not How You Think)

Bigger isn’t always better. A well-tuned 10″ sub in a proper enclosure will outperform a cheap 15″ every time. For most vehicles, a 10″ or 12″ subwoofer hits the sweet spot between deep bass response and practical size.

Enclosure Types

Sealed enclosures deliver tight, accurate bass — great for rock, jazz, and acoustic music. Ported enclosures are louder and more efficient, perfect for hip-hop, EDM, and anyone who wants to feel the bass. Custom-fit enclosures maximize space and can be built to match your vehicle’s interior.

Power Handling

Match your sub’s RMS power rating to your amplifier’s output. Ignore peak power numbers — they’re marketing. A 500W RMS sub paired with a 500W RMS amp will sound significantly better than a “1200W peak” sub on a 200W amp.

Our Recommendation

For most daily drivers, we recommend a quality 12″ sub (JL Audio, Kicker, or Rockford Fosgate) in a sealed or ported enclosure, paired with a monoblock amplifier. It’s the setup that delivers the best balance of output, clarity, and trunk space.
